🔥 Assassins - Feb 28 - Mar 9th
Assassins is a darkly satirical musical by Stephen Sondheim (music & lyrics) and John Weidman (book) that explores the lives and motives of nine individuals who attempted (successfully or not) to assassinate U.S. presidents. Through a blend of historical fiction and vaudevillian-style storytelling, the show examines the American Dream’s dark underbelly, portraying these infamous figures as desperate individuals seeking recognition, justice, or revenge.
Set in a carnival-like atmosphere, the show is narrated by the Proprietor, who tempts each assassin into taking their shot, and the Balladeer, who offers a contrasting perspective on their actions. From John Wilkes Booth (Lincoln’s assassin) to Lee Harvey Oswald (Kennedy’s assassin), the musical weaves together their stories, culminating in a haunting conclusion about fame, disillusionment, and violence in American culture.
With its bold concept, non-linear storytelling, and provocative themes, Assassins challenges audiences to reconsider history’s villains and their place in the national psyche.
